Beliefs To put it simply, Lutherans are Christians. Lutherans believe in one God who is revealed in three Persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father is the creator of all things, visible and invisible. The Son is Jesus Christ, true God and true man, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered for the sins of the world, died on the cross, and was buried. The Son rose from the dead on the third day and has ascended to the right hand of the Father, and from there will return to judge the living and dead. The Holy Spirit works to call, gather, enlighten, and sanctify the whole Christian church on earth. It is the Holy Spirit who by water and the Word brings sinful humanity into fellowship with Jesus Christ through faith in his death and resurrection, and through the means of grace keeps humanity in such faith and hope. Jesus Christ is the center of the Christian life, and He is revealed by the Holy Spirit in the Holy Scriptures. The Bible is the Word of God, written by men inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible is the norma normans, that is, the 'normative authority' for Lutherans. Our theology and practice do not contradict the teachings of Holy Scripture. The Lutheran Confessions, found in the 1580 Book of Concord, are the norma normata, that is, the 'norm that is normed by another authority.' The teachings of the Lutheran Confessions fall under the normative authority of Holy Scripture, and for Lutherans also serve as the guide for how we read and understand Scripture. Lutheran theology is steeped in a rich tradition that goes beyond Martin Luther and the Reformation all the way back to Jesus Christ and the apostles. If you are interested in learning more about the Lutheran understanding of the Christian faith, please get in touch with Pastor Bakker. Do I have to be a Lutheran to join Lutheran Student Fellowship? Not at all. While the majority of the group is Lutheran, Christians of other communions have held membership in Lutheran Student Fellowship and even certain positions on the executive board. Come to one of our meetings to see for yourself! We meet every Sunday night during Central Michigan University's academic year at 7:00pm for Bible study, and then have a meeting at 8:00pm to plan activities, organize mission and service trips, and set up fundraising events. |
